Position Overview: The Upper Elementary School Music/Middle School Band Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing a music program for students in grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. This role involves fostering a lifelong love of music through performances and developmentally appropriate curriculum and instruction. The teacher will collaborate with the Lower Elementary Music Teacher and the Middle and High School Music Department to build and align the curriculum to AISJ’s standards and benchmarks. The teacher will lead musical performances and demonstrate a passion for teaching music, understanding its role in students’ social, emotional, and academic growth.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Current teaching certification appropriate to age level and subject specializations.
  • Minimum undergraduate degree in Education or the area of expertise required.
  • Previous teaching experience and strong knowledge in the area of specializations at the required levels of study.
  • Proven collaborator and skilled at working well with others.
  • Firm understanding of Elementary and Middle School philosophies.
  • Passion for working with Elementary and Middle School students.
  • Willingness to supervise co-curricular roles.
  • Positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Expertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs that develop a sense of classroom community and trust.
  • Solid understanding of a middle school organization, programs, and students.
  • Proven ability to differentiate instruction and integrate learning.

 

Preferred Skills and Attributes:
  • Willingness to innovate and inspire.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of developmentally appropriate instructional practices within an elementary school context.
  • Experience teaching elementary music, preferably in an international school setting or with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong classroom management skills, appropriate for elementary school age students.
  • Ability to communicate well with all ages of elementary school students, staff, and parents.
  • Deep understanding of curriculum and ability to plan instruction and assess learning outcomes using standards and benchmarks.
  • Knowledgeable of current research, curriculum, and pedagogy related to elementary school music instruction.
  • Positive attitude and commitment to collaborating with others.
  • Proven ability to differentiate instruction to meet individual needs and integrate learning into other subject areas.
  • Proficiency in playing at least one instrument.
  • Knowledge of and ability to administer a wide range of assessment tools.
  • Recent professional development specific to elementary school music.
  • Love for singing and willingness to lead school singing groups and performances.
  • Willingness to lead assemblies, musical, and other music performances within the school.
  • Desire to promote a lifelong love of music across the entire elementary school community.

 

General Responsibilities:
  • Provide in-class support to identified students.
  • Collaborate with the Pretoria Inclusion Services Team.
  • Assist in the educational and social development of students under the guidance of the LSP Teacher.
  • Support students with emotional or behavioral differences and help develop self-regulation and social skills.
  • Exhibit flexibility in dealing with day-to-day situations typical of a learning support program.
  • Support and assist students individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  • Communicate proactively and consistently with other educators.
  • Keep consistent notes regarding student performance and maintain anecdotal notes on individual students regarding their progress and challenges.
  • Give consistent feedback to students and teachers as required.
  • Prepare teaching materials under the guidance of the LSP teacher as needed.
  • Attend team meetings and professional development as necessary.
  • Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably assigned by the Principal.
  • Assist with after-school activities.
  • Adhere to supervision duties as assigned by the Elementary School administration.

 

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Communicate and liaise regularly with fellow team department/grade members regarding planning, assessment, parent and community contact, subject organization, and classroom issues including discipline, expectations, and classroom routines.
  • Promote and establish integrative links and/or awareness.
  • Take an active role in behavioral management and pastoral care of students.
  • Use a range of strategies to differentiate learning where needed.
  • Attend and constructively contribute to faculty meetings and workshops.
  • Assist in supervision of students during recess.
  • Coordinate class activities as deemed necessary.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parents.
  • Establish links with the parent community to ensure they are well informed about student progress.
  • Assist, as required, in the development of a strong elementary school program.
  • Act as a resource/contact/support for new staff members (i.e., curriculum, schedules, procedures).
  • Participate in at least one co-curricular activity per year.
  • Participate in and assist with school events as required.

 

Work Days: Monday through Friday, 188 days per school year.
