Primary Learning Support Teacher (ages 3-12 years old)

American International School of Lusaka

This school is based in Lusaka, Zambia and is looking for a Primary Learning Support Teacher (ages 3-12 years old)

Qualifications/Attributes:

  • Possesses a Bachelor’s Degree (minimum) and current qualification/certification in teaching area(s). Master’s degree in the area of specialization preferred.
  • Previous experience teaching children ages 3-12 with learning differences, particularly with children with dyslexia.
  • Ability to analyze and use data to inform learning interventions and targeted instruction.
  • Deep commitment to collaboration and reflection (co-planning and co-teaching)
  • Organizational ability, initiative, and effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience using technology that enhances curriculum, communication, and school improvement efforts.
  • Additional experience as a Speech and Language specialist or Occupational Therapist would be ideal.

 

Job Purpose:

The role of the Learning Support Teacher is to work with the Student Services team to meet the learning needsof our diverse learners. In order to achieve this objective, the teacher must work closely with the students’ families as well as teachers to develop plans of action and materials to support students within the curriculum. The primary aim is to reduce barriers to learning and promote the inclusion of all students within the least restrictive environment.

 

Responsibilities:
● Demonstrates an understanding of the curriculum, subject content, and the developmental needs of students by providing relevant learning experiences.
● Plans using the school’s curriculum, effective strategies, resources, and data to meet the needs of all students.
● Effectively engages students in learning by using a variety of instructional strategies in order to meet individual learning needs.
● Modifies assignments and tasks to better meet the academic needs of the student.
● Provides small group and 1 to 1 instruction to students requiring additional support.
● Collects, analyzes, and uses all relevant data to measure student academic progress and to guide instructional content and delivery methods.
● Provides timely verbal and written feedback to both students and parents throughout the school year.
● Develops measurable goals and objectives for identified students and monitors them as part of ongoing formative assessment.
● Uses resources, routines, and procedures to provide a respectful, positive, safe, student-centered environment.
● Maintains a commitment to professional ethics, communicates effectively, and takes responsibility for and participates in professional growth that results in enhanced student learning.
● Perform other duties and responsibilities consistent with those normally associated with the position.
● Assumes other job-related responsibilities as assigned by the Primary Principal.
