Job Description:

Tambearly School, situated amidst the tropical beauty of The Bahamas, is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Caribbean Social Studies Teacher to join our team. As a Caribbean Social Studies Teacher, you will have the opportunity to immerse students in the rich history, culture, geography, and contemporary issues of the Caribbean region, fostering a deep understanding and appreciation for the diverse societies and cultures that shape the Caribbean identity.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and implement a comprehensive Caribbean Social Studies curriculum that explores the history, geography, culture, politics, economics, and social issues of the Caribbean region.
  2. Design engaging and culturally relevant lessons that incorporate primary sources, literature, multimedia resources, and experiential learning activities to bring Caribbean history and culture to life.
  3. Facilitate meaningful discussions and critical inquiries into key topics and themes in Caribbean Social Studies, including colonialism, slavery, independence movements, globalization, environmental sustainability, and social justice.
  4. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, such as project-based learning, cooperative learning, inquiry-based learning, and role-playing simulations, to promote active student engagement and deeper understanding.
  5. Integrate interdisciplinary connections between Caribbean Social Studies and other subjects, such as literature, art, music, and environmental science, to provide students with a holistic perspective on Caribbean culture and society.
  6. Incorporate technology and digital resources to enhance learning experiences, including virtual field trips, interactive maps, online databases, and multimedia presentations.
  7. Foster students’ critical thinking skills, analytical skills, and historical empathy through the examination of primary and secondary sources, historical debates, and case studies.
  8. Provide differentiated instruction and support to meet the diverse needs of students, including English language learners (ELLs), students with learning differences, and gifted learners.
  9. Assess student learning through a variety of formative and summative assessments, including essays, projects, presentations, quizzes, and exams, and provide timely and constructive feedback to students.
  10. Cultivate a positive and inclusive classroom culture that values diversity, promotes respect, and celebrates the contributions of Caribbean peoples and cultures.
  11. Collaborate with colleagues, department members, and school leadership to align curriculum, participate in professional development opportunities, and contribute to the school’s academic and cultural programs.
  12. Engage with the local community and seek opportunities for experiential learning, service-learning projects, and partnerships with local organizations to connect classroom learning to real-world issues and experiences.

 

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Caribbean Studies, Social Studies, History, Education, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Teaching certification or licensure from a recognized institution or governing body.
  • Experience teaching Caribbean Social Studies or related subjects at the middle or high school level.
  • Strong content knowledge of Caribbean history, geography, culture, and contemporary issues, with a focus on the diverse societies and cultures of the Caribbean region.
  • Familiarity with Caribbean Social Studies curriculum frameworks, standards, and resources.
  • Proficiency in curriculum development, instructional design, and assessment strategies for social studies education.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage students in meaningful discussions and provide constructive feedback.
  • Strong organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that values diversity, equity, and cultural competency.
  • Ability to integrate technology effectively into instruction and utilize educational software and digital resources to enhance student learning experiences.
