Located in Sendai, Japan, Tohoku International School is a K–12 International Baccalaureate (IB) World School accredited by WASC and the IB. TIS serves both local and international families with a coeducational program taught primarily in English. We provide the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for elementary students, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for middle school, and the Diploma Programme (DP) for high school, preparing graduates for top international universities.

Role Overview
The Elementary EAL Teacher will support students who are developing English as an additional language. You will design engaging, scaffolded lessons, collaborate with homeroom teachers, and create strategies that build both language proficiency and confidence. The role requires a balance of individualized instruction and group learning, helping students thrive academically and socially within the IB Primary Years Programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver EAL lessons that align with IB PYP standards
- Support students in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills
- Collaborate with homeroom and subject teachers to integrate language support
- Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of multilingual learners
- Contribute to the wider school community and extracurricular activities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, TESOL, or a related field
- Valid teaching license or certification (e.g., QTS, PGCE, or equivalent)
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in international schools
- Strong knowledge of EAL methodologies and language acquisition
- Familiarity with IB PYP and international curricula
- Excellent classroom management and communication skills
- High level of English proficiency, both spoken and written
- Self-motivated, proactive, and enthusiastic about professional growth
- Ability to build strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
