Role Overview

The ideal candidate is a motivated and experienced individual to fill the role of Senior School EAL Teacher. This specialist position demands a dedicated educator who can effectively design, manage, and deliver engaging, high-standard language instruction and support.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and teach high-quality, differentiated EAL lessons to Senior School students across various proficiency levels. Align instruction strictly with the IB curriculum frameworks and NLCS’s high academic expectations.
• Develop and execute strategies that promote advanced vocabulary building, academic writing (including essay structures for DP), critical reading, and confident oral communication across all subject areas.
• Assess student language proficiency consistently using standardized tools and classroom-based assessments. Provide timely, constructive feedback and collaborate with students on setting language development goals.
• Collaborate consistently with mainstream subject teachers, department colleagues, and the wider pastoral team on co-planning integrated units, modifying challenging materials, and ensuring effective inclusion of EAL learners in a demanding academic environment.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress, ensuring effective documentation for transition and placement decisions.
• Be independent, self-motivated, and proactive in enriching the curriculum and developing wider school initiatives, supporting students’ language use in co-curriculars (CCAs).
• Ability to use new technologies to enhance the quality of teaching and learning for all students.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents, and to build strong relationships with all members of the school community, particularly explaining the needs and progress of EAL students to parents.

Qualifications

• Education: Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or a related field.
• Certification: Possess a valid teaching license or official certification (e.g., QTS, PGCE, or equivalent) specifically for Secondary/Senior School teaching. A specialized EAL qualification (e.g., TEFL, CELTA, or relevant MA) is highly desirable.
• Experience: Demonstrate a minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience teaching EAL/ESL at the Secondary/Senior School level, with significant, verified experience supporting students within the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and/or IB Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum being mandatory.
• Curriculum Knowledge: Show strong, demonstrated knowledge of EAL acquisition stages, instructional best practices, and content-language integration strategies within a rigorous academic context.
• Skills: Maintain excellent classroom management and superb communication and collaboration skills.
• Language: Be highly proficient in spoken and written English.
