Role Overview

As a Secondary School Head of Physics, you will be directly responsible for the strategic development and delivery of the Physics curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4 (IGCSE), and 5 (A-Level). Your role involves fostering a culture of excellence in teaching, ensuring outstanding student outcomes, managing departmental resources, and actively mentoring teaching staff. The ideal candidate possesses deep subject mastery, proven leadership skills, and a commitment to maintaining BSC’s high academic standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Physics department, overseeing curriculum development, assessment strategies, and quality assurance for IGCSE and A-Level Physics.
• Teach high-quality, rigorous Physics lessons to students across the secondary age range, primarily focusing on examination groups (IGCSE/A-Level).
• Mentor and appraise departmental staff, promoting best practice in pedagogy and subject delivery.
• Manage the departmental budget, equipment, and laboratory resources, ensuring a safe and stimulating learning environment.
• Drive initiatives to encourage greater student participation in STEM subjects, including leading Physics-related extracurricular activities and competitions.
• Collaborate effectively with the Head of Science and other senior leaders on whole-school academic strategy.
• Maintain a high standard of student discipline and engagement within the department.
• Communicate effectively with parents regarding student progress and departmental objectives.

Qualifications

• Education: Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics or a closely related scientific field.
• Certification: Possess a valid teaching license or official certification (e.g., QTS, PGCE, or an equivalent international certification).
• Experience: Demonstrate a minimum of 3 years of experience teaching Physics, with previous experience in a leadership or Head of Department role being highly advantageous.
• Curriculum Knowledge: Show strong, demonstrated knowledge of international curricula, especially the English National Curriculum, IGCSE, and A-Level Physics (Cambridge or Edexcel).
• Skills: Maintain excellent classroom management, communication, and staff leadership skills.
• Language: Be highly proficient in spoken and written English.
• Proactive Approach: Be independent, self-motivated, and willing to proactively enrich the curriculum and develop wider school initiatives.
• Commitment: Show a robust commitment to ongoing professional growth and learning.
