Role Overview

The ideal candidate is a motivated and experienced individual to fill the role of Junior School EAL Teacher. This position demands a dedicated educator who can effectively design, manage, and deliver high-standard English as an Additional Language (EAL) instruction for students in the Junior School (Years 1 to 6). You will lead a dynamic learning environment, primarily delivering a curriculum that aligns with the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). You will guide students through the stages of language acquisition, ensuring they gain the necessary skills to access the mainstream curriculum with confidence. By working within our Junior School department, you will ensure every multilingual learner develops the oracy, literacy, and academic language needed for lifelong success.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality, engaging EAL lessons that align with the IB PYP framework and the linguistic needs of Junior School students.
• Develop and execute targeted language interventions using evidence-based strategies to accelerate English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
• Assess student progress consistently using language proficiency benchmarks to track growth and provide personalized feedback for improvement.
• Collaborate consistently with homeroom teachers to co-plan and scaffold lessons, ensuring EAL students can fully engage with units of inquiry.
• Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment for students.
• Communicate effectively with parents to build strong partnerships and provide regular updates on student language development and well-being.
• Utilize new technologies to enhance the quality of teaching and track student achievement.
• Proactively enrich the curriculum by leading wider school initiatives, such as literacy weeks, language cafes, or after-school EAL support clubs.
• Commit to ongoing professional growth by participating in school-wide training and international workshops on language acquisition pedagogy.
• Build strong relationships with all members of the school community to foster a sense of belonging and mutual respect.

Qualification

• Education: Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.
• Certification: Possess a valid teaching license or official certification (e.g., QTS, PGCE, or equivalent) with a specialization in EAL or ESL.
• Experience: Demonstrate a minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a Junior School EAL position, preferably within an IB PYP or international setting.
• Subject Knowledge: Show strong knowledge of the IB PYP curriculum, WIDA standards, or similar language acquisition frameworks.
• Professional Skills: Maintain excellent classroom management and superb communication and collaboration skills.
• Language: Be highly proficient in spoken and written English.
• Technical Ability: Demonstrate the ability to use modern technologies to enhance the quality of teaching and learning for all students.
• Personal Attributes: Be independent, self-motivated, and proactive in enriching the school community and supporting multilingual learners.
